Oh my
In Hinduism and most belief systems specific to India, it is the syllable considered the most sacred of words ( mantra ) believed to have a religious or mystical effect. In the Sanskrit language, it consists of the vowels a and u, which together give the sound o, and the sound m . These three sounds symbolize the three worlds consisting of the earth, the sky and the heavens; the three great Hindu gods consisting of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva; the three sacred Vedic texts called Rig , Yacur and Sama . Thus, the Om syllable mysteriously represents the essence of the entire universe. It is said at the beginning and end of prayers, hymns and meditations in Hindu rituals. It is also used in Buddhist and Jain rituals without being bound by a certain rule. The written form of the Om syllable was used to indicate the beginning of writings and inscriptions after the 6th century.
The syllable Om is discussed in many of the Upanishads , the philosophical Vedic texts; of these, Mandukya is devoted entirely to one syllable. Om, which is also used in yogic practices, is associated with verbal meditation techniques. In the Puranas (Old Sages), it is used for sectarian purposes; while the Shivaites interpret Om as the symbol of the linga (the male organ symbol of Shiva), the Vishnuites describe these three sounds as a trinity consisting of the Lord Vishnu, his wife Sri and the worshipper.
